Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford started to become fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not suitable for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot on her third attempt she applied for and was awarded acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. However, she made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
